This is a sponsored post about tips for keeping the kids calm and busy during a storm or disaster with preparedness activities.  The post has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc.(#CollectiveBias) and it’s advertiser Duracell  (#PrepWithPower).

I have lived in New Mexico my whole life, and we are always super dry, or flooding.  There is no happy meeting point, it’s one or the other, which is why it’s not only important to have a disaster/storm plan, but also preparedness activities so the kids are not scared if something ever was to happen.

Duracell BatteriesI recently went to Walmart to find fun items to add to our preparedness kit that would be helpful in keeping the kids calm.  I grabbed a few things like coloring books, board games, walkie talkies, but I had to remind stop and really think about what would be important – flashlights, and Duracell Quantum batteries.  If I just keep a stock pile of Duracell batteries around there isn’t a need to spend all kinds of money on more toys, because they can play with their battery operated toys that they love so much, like their VTech, and other electronic devices that can be powered by Duracell.

The last thing I want is for my kids to be scared if something happens so I cam up with a few new, fun preparedness activities for kids!

The last thing any of us want to deal with is a major storm or disaster leaving us without electricity, and essential items we need, but it’s something we need to consider.  If you have children in the home it’s also important to consider keeping a preparedness kit to keep them occupied so they are not scared.  So we came up with 10 storm preparedness activities for kids.  Now, this preparedness kit would not be all that you need for when of a storm or disaster.  You are still going to need food, water, medical supplies, and other preparedness items.  This preparedness kit is specifically to help keep the kids busy so they spend less time being scared.

New Board Game

I know you are thinking how in the world you are going to play a board game in the dark.  Don’t forget we are well equipped with flashlights powered by Duracell batteries, even those fun ones that fit on your head so we can still do fun things to help keep the kids calm.  I know without a doubt, my kids would totally dig this fun My Little Pony game, and it’s one they have not played yet so they are likely to spend more time playing it.

dance partyDance Party

We always dance in our house, if there is music someone is shaking their hips.  The kids also LOVE it when mom DJ’s so they can play dance party.  Their oldest sister teaches them new moves, and dad and I have a blast watching these girls dance.

Karaoke

Since we have the AWESOME princess CD Player/Karaoke machine, which can be ran off Duracell batteries, I know we would end up having a karaoke night.

Who knows that song?

We play it in the car all the time, but someone starts singing a song, and the last person left sanding wins.  They then get to ask anyone they want to do something silly for the winner, or you can have them has someone a question.

Simon Says

Play it like normal Simon Says, but with a flashlight.  When you say “Simon Says” or don’t say it you shine the light at the kids, so they can see their shadows on the wall.  Just makes things a little more fun.

things to do without electricityRead a book

Since we have the awesome flashlights that go on our heads and Duracell batteries, we can read books.

Preparedness gamesPlay 20 questions

I don’t think this game will ever get old in our house.  You ask someone a question and someone will answer or take the dare.  Be careful, dares can get a little crazy.  We played this in the car one time, and Vayda had to eat a ketchup package by itself.  No worries, she likes ketchup anyway lol.

Walkie Talkie Charades

Device up into teams, and the team that is doing the charade gets Okay, it will not happen anyway, so why leave it out.  Five kids, and a husband all with their own flashlights, powered to the max with Duracell batteries.  Shadow Charades is going to happen!

Again, cool flashlights on the head powered by Duracell batteries means the kids can even color.

There are also things you are going to want to avoid as much as possible to help keep the kids calm, like:

10 Storm Preparedness Activities For KidsTell your kids stories about when they were little

Telling my kids stories about when they were a baby never gets old.  They love listening to stories about themselves, as well as stories about each other.  We often end up laughing, and it never fails mom ends up with that warm fuzzy feeling.  I think this would be something my family would enjoy to help them calm down before falling asleep.

Things To Avoid During A Storm or Disaster So The Kids Stay Calm

Listening to the radio nonstop.  You are going to need to listen for updates, if the kids are having a hard time you might consider doing it alone in another room.  Since you have flashlights, and plenty of Duracell Quantum batteries it should be an issues going into another room.

If you are lucky enough to have electricity the same goes for TV.  Don’t sit around with it on the news channel so the kids can see what is happening outside of the home.

It might be a good idea to keep the kids inside so they cannot see with their own eyes what is happening.  If your children are like mine, they can often over analyze things making them more scared.

Don’t talk about things that could be happening to other people around the kids.  They don’t need to worry about family and friends who are not there with them.  They already have so much going on in their little minds, it’s likely best if you keep them focused on having fun.

If your kids are like mind you also want to stay away from any bad stories or ghost stories as well.

Do you have any preparedness activties in place for your children if a disaster or storm strikes in your area?  If so leave us a comment I would love to hear everyone’s ideas.  Maybe we can all add new fun games so our children are not terrified t
