Does Daylight Savings Time serve as a reminder for you to do different things around your house to keep it comfortable & secure? If so, great, and if not, maybe it can be a great reminder going forward.
Can you believe we are already talking about fall daylight savings time 2016? Gosh, where does the time go? I swear, it seems like we just covered the time change that comes with the spring and summer months, yet here we are talking about the time change that comes with the fall and winter months. However, if you live in Arizona, there is no need to worry about the time change or adjusting your sleep schedule, but it is probably still a good idea to check things out in order to make sure your home is comfortable and secure.
Household Chores to Get Done Before Daylight Savings Time
Since time changes are a great way to remember to keep your house comfortable and secure, I thought I would share a few household chores to get done with the time change.
- Flip or rotate your mattress. Don’t forget, it’s a good idea to flip or turn your mattress if you have a pillow top. Flipping my mattress when the time change rolls around is about the only way I remember to do it, lol.
- Restock your emergency kit. It’s a good idea to stay stocked up on all emergency supplies. Make sure you have Energizer batteries for flashlights, bandages, and everything else you need to keep your emergency kit in tip-top shape.
- Clean gutters: Don’t forget to make sure your gutters are not full of leaves and other debris before the winter hits.
- Clean up those filters. Clean up or replace your heating and cooling filters.
- Pipes: Be sure to winterize all your pipes to help keep water from freezing, which often leads to busted pipes.
- Check your roof. Be sure to take a good look at your roof, make sure there isn’t any damage, and remove any leaves or other debris.
- Fireplace: Be sure your fireplace is ready for winter. Clean the chimney and have it inspected by a professional.
- Prepare animal shelters. If you have outside animals, make sure they are going to have a warm place to get out of the weather. You might consider buying a heated bowl to keep their water from freezing and to make sure your dogs are safe and any other outside animals are safe and warm.
- Go through kids clothing. Now is the perfect time to go through the kid’s summer clothing and get rid of anything that will not fit next season. It gives you a chance to clean up your child’s room and know what they need as far as clothing goes.
- Put up the summer clothing. If you or the kids have summer clothing that can be put into storage until next summer, get it out of there and put it up.
- Change Batteries in your clocks—Daylight Savings This is the perfect time to change out all your old batteries for some new Energizer batteries to keep your home comfortable and secure. You might also want to make sure your electric alarm clock has backup batteries, just in case. I can’t count the times I have woken up late because the electricity went off in the middle of the night and reset my alarm. It’s easier to just put a few Energizer Batteries in all your alarm clocks
- Flashlights: Make sure you have emergency flashlights somewhere in the house and be sure you not only have batteries in each flashlight but a few extra just in case. You don’t want to be stuck a flashlight and batteries that go dead 30 minutes later.
- Smoke Alarms, Carbon monoxide detectors, and other home safety devices Testing smoke detectors and alarms is critical but so is changing out the batteries. In my opinion, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Especially because of the growing number of smart device we rely on to keep us comfortable, safe and secure in our homes. The number of homes with smoke detectors and alarms has grown, but according to the National Fire Protection Association, about 71% of alarms that have failed to operate had disconnected, missing or dead batteries. Which is yet another reason you want to check the batteries not only in your alarm clocks but everywhere in the house?
Did you know that Energizer® has partnered with the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) to help keep families safe with the Change Your Clock, Check Your BatteriesTM program? That’s right, every fall Energizer® and the IAFC work together and remind people about simple, life-saving habits for daylight savings time.
Home safety and security have evolved over the years far beyond the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Today many of us rely on other devices that are connected to the internet or our smartphones to enhance safety and security.
Since October is National Fire Prevention month, the wonderful folks from Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs are working to encourage everyone to make home safety a priority.
November 6, 2016 is the big day! We all change our clocks for daylight savings time! That means we can take that extra hour and make sure put extra effort into keeping our homes safe by checking our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, along with all of your home safety devices, such as connected home devices, flashlights, and other critical battery-operated devices.
Since home safety and security have evolved well beyond the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and are more likely to be connected to the internet or your smartphones, it’s even more critical to test the devices we rely on to keep our family and homes safe. Energizer provides smart energy for smart devices with a variety of battery sizes and products across their portfolio that can power our home devices.
