12 Awesome Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Pet Today

1.) No More Lonely Nights

Did you just suffer a break up? Tired of eating dinner alone and having no one to cuddle with? Fret no more, a shelter pet is the perfect partner. They are full of affection and won’t ever complain about what you cooked for dinner. Plus, they don’t have thumbs, so they won’t change the channel while you’re cuddling on the couch. Except for possible snorers or late night potty breaks, a shelter pet is the perfect roommate and partner.

2.) Great Workout Partner

I love to work out, but I’m not quite motivated to run each time. Well, I just click my Piper’s leash onto her collar and I don’t really have the choice to back out on my morning run. She sets the pace and doesn’t slow. Shelter pets are great workout buddies because they need the exercise and love to get out and play.

Taking them for walks or using them as weights is a fun way to exercise. They won’t judge you like the meat heads at the gym and won’t make fun of your not so perfect Downward Dog.

3.) Save Some Money

A new pet has expenses, of course. Food and vet visits are a given part of having a pet, but what about spay/neuter, first shots, and microchipping? Not to worry, when you adopt a shelter animal, all of that is usually included in the adoption fees. Also, some shelters give new pet parents a starter kit for their new friends.

4.) Awesome Wingman

If you’re looking for a way to talk to people, a shelter animal is the way to go. People love animals and those people are usually attracted to animal lovers. It’s a win-win for everyone. Just take your new friend to the park or the pet store and you’ll be surprised how many looks, smiles, and “Hello, how old is your friend here?” you’ll get.

5.) Great Co-Pilots

When I travel anywhere it’s usually alone, as many of you can relate. I’m so happy that I have my girl Zoe to load up and hit the road with. Shelter pets are just the same.

They love to travel and will be stoked to load up and head anywhere, just as long as it’s with you. You, your new friend, a few potty stops and some great snacks is all it takes for a memorable trip without the never-ending question of “Are we there yet?”

6.) You’ll Be a Hero

Adopting a shelter pet is something to brag about, and your good deed won’t go unnoticed. It’s a great trend to start among your friends and family. Remind them just how awesome your new friend is, how easy it is to do, and how amazing you feel for saving that shelter pet’s life.

8.) Wonderful Babysitters

Of course, I don’t mean leave your little ones with them all day. I mean it in a general sense that shelter pets are great with kids. Most shelter pets have been to homes with children before, so they love to socialize with the little ones. Another great thing about have a new friend for your little ones too is that it teaches children responsibility, compassion, and love. Plus, watching those babies (animal and human) play together is one of the most amazing things to see!

It’s great to vent to them about that rude person at the grocery store or how you should be the one getting married next. They will listen and agree! They’ll jump for joy over that new job and will be there if you cry, it doesn’t matter; their love is unconditional.

11.) Not a Whole Lot of Cleaning

Adopting a shelter animal is a smart decision for good reasons. They are usually older and house trained, so there aren’t as many accidents to clean up. Your shoes, furniture and carpet will thank you because they won’t get chewed or pooped on. Also, the great thing about a shelter cat is they bathe themselves and bath time with a shelter dog is just plain fun. If you do adopt a younger shelter pet.

12.) Life Saving

Though many shelters would love to give all homeless and abandoned animals a home, the sad fact is they can’t. With the huge number of pets coming into shelters, over 2 million pets are euthanized each year. By adopting a pet from your local shelter, you are saving them from an unnecessary, untimely death. Just like all animals, a shelter pet will thank you with their love and devotion for the rest of their lives, which thanks to you , will be much longer and happier.

With a shelter animal, you can’t go wrong. A puppy pal, kitty comrade, or even a bunny buddy are all great friends that need and deserve a loving home. Even horses and birds are often abandoned for whatever reason and need someone like you to save them. Shelter pets have huge personalities, open ears, tender eyes, loving hearts and endless devotion. You are not only saving their life, you are saving your own.

I think you gave some great reasons to get a shelter dog but most of all they somehow seem to know that you saved them and give you more then you will ever give them. Please adopt!

Shelter dogs are the best. It make me sad to think of all the puppies in jail and not able to find a true home.
