Mistakes Parents Make When Dealing With Bedwetting

Bedwetting doesn’t have to be a difficult conversation to have with your child.  If you have a hard time talking about bedwetting with your child, it will make it harder for them to talk about.  In fact, there are a number of mistakes parents make when dealing with bedwetting.  Trust me, my parents made many of them.  In their defense. It was a long time ago, and we have learned a lot since the 80s, lol.

Mistakes Parents Make When Dealing With Bedwetting

Here are a few mistakes parents make when dealing with bedwetting:

Don’t assume you already know

Do your research and don’t assume you already know about bedwetting.  Did you know that one in six children ages 4 to 12 wet the bed? It’s a lot more common than most people realize.  The more you know about bedwetting, the better you will be able to talk to and help your child.

Talk about it

Don’t be scared to talk about bedwetting with your child.  Make sure they understand that it should not be something to be ashamed about.

Get frustrated with your child while they are around

I know, washing sheets can be frustrating, but the long-term impact it can have on your child’s self-esteem just isn’t worth it.  Save your frustration for when you are alone.  The last thing parents want to do is make the child think it’s their fault, and there is something they should be doing to stop it.

Don’t avoid talking to your child’s pediatrician

Do not avoid talking to your doctor about your child’s bedwetting.  It’s something they should be aware of, and they might have some great suggestions.

Don’t wake them up in the middle of the night

Rather than waking your child up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, consider using a product like GoodNites.  Waking your child up in the middle of the night doesn’t guarantee anything; it just leads to frustration and a sleepy child.

Don’t make them wear a diaper to bed

My mom did this to me once, and it was so embarrassing.  Nobody knew, but still, it’s one memory I could definitely go without remembering.  I was far to old to be wearing a diaper, but I do understand because we were out camping and my mom was trying to save me from the embarrassment that would have come with waking up wet.  Plus, I don’t think we had products like GoodNites back then.  Which is what I use with my daughter!
