I’m passionate about several subjects and bedwetting is one of them. As a child, I wet the bed. Now, I’m a mommy and have two kids who have had to deal with bedwetting. It doesn’t make me an expert on the subject, but I have learned a lot over the years and can relate on a personal level.
Things Parents Might Want To Know About Bedwetting
If you have a little one who is wetting the bed, here are a few things you might not know about bedwetting.
Bedwetting is a health problem
Bedwetting often has to do with a child having a bladder that is not entirely developed. However, it’s an excellent idea to visit your doctor for his opinion.
Bedwetting is not their fault.
I know most parents don’t get mad or upset when their child wets the bed, but it’s critical to avoid showing signs of frustration or saying something that may hurt your child. I know it can get frustrating washing sheets day after day, but the moment you show signs of failure or get upset with your child, they know they are doing something wrong. Showing your frustration will only hurt your child; it will not change or fix anything.
Don’t cause your child stress
Most children live to see their parents proud. Don’t let your child see that you are frustrated, mad, upset, or anything other than supportive. It’s crucial you support your child and do your best never to make them feel wrong, different, or less important because they wet the bed. A child who wants to see their parents proud of them but can’t stop wetting the bed can become stressed. Kids don’t have to deal with the stress of the same things adults do, but they can get stressed. Gosh, don’t you remember how hard it was a child? Imagine being different because of bedwetting, too.
There is nothing wrong with bedwetting.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Research shows that psychologically, kids who suffer from bedwetting don’t want to take part in activities—sleepovers. As parents, we need to do everything we can to ensure our children don’t feel this way. I remember feeling that way as a child, but it was only because I knew I had to put on a baby diaper just to be on the safe side. Thankfully, we have options like GoodNites® TRU-FIT* Underwear for our children.
Training out of bedwetting doesn’t work
As a matter of fact, 43% of parents believe that children can be trained out of bedwetting, 41% of parents describe it as frustrating, 51% seek a better overall bedwetting product, and more than one-quarter express anxiety about their child staying the night somewhere and having an accident. Remember, there is nothing wrong with bedwetting. It’s normal, and nothing you can do will stop it.
More children than many of us realize suffer from bedwetting in the US
Did you know that there are about 5 to 7 million children who wet the bed here in the US? Bedwetting is a fairly common condition that children cannot be trained out of. Did you know that 1 in 6 children between the ages of 4 and 12 suffer from bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), according to a study done by GoodNites®?
Try things that can HELP control bedwetting.
Rather than trying to train them out of bedwetting, try to support them by doing a few of the following.:
- Avoid liquids about 3 hours before bed.
- Say no to caffeine drinks.
- Have them use the restroom right before heading to bed.
- Wake them up before you head to bed so they can use the bathroom
- GoodNites® TRU-FIT* Underwear
They will grow out of it and life goes on…
Remember, children are different. They grow and change at different rates. Your child’s issue of wetting the bed could be because their bladder control isn’t quite mature yet. Children are different and develop skills at different speeds.
Bedwetting doesn’t have to be embarrassing
I wouldn’t go anywhere because I was so embarrassed I wet the bed. I remember on a camping trip, I was worried about wetting the bed, and my mom took me into the tent when nobody was looking and put a diaper on me. Sure it was embarrassing, but my mom didn’t tell anyone, and she was very secretive about it because she knew how I felt. While being discrete about it isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it still lets them know they are different from everyone else.
Which is why I’m so thankful there are for my kids. They are real underwear with a place for a disposable pad. YES, so my kids have regular underwear like their brothers and sisters. They still know they wet the bed and other kids know, but they are not ashamed of themselves because they are not treated differently because of something they cannot control.
