Growing up, like so many other girls I lacked self-confidence. I thought being beautiful was those girls on TV, and well that was never me. Growing up I rode horses, lived in the country, and there was not a whole lot girly about me. Which was great until I hit my teenage years, and I remember my mom telling me that beauty was only skin deep, and true beauty came from within. Looking back I wished I would have talked to my mom about things more, I was a closed off person. I was raised to be tough, not cry, not be weak, but I know my mom would have understood and helped me. Which is why I make it a point to talk to my kids about beauty, I want them to understand that true beauty come from deep down.
I started to understand what my mom was talking about when I meet my husband, and when I had children everything changed. I changed, suddenly so many things that mattered before didn’t. From one day to the next, I was a different person with a whole new look on life. I don’t think of being beautiful as the color of someone’s hair, or the size they are, it’s more of a characteristic. My family and friends are beautiful because they are funny, compassionate, understanding, there for me, caring, confident and good people from the inside out. Being beautiful is about the person you are inside, and it shines out giving them a glow.
It’s important for children to feel confident. When they are young it’s their parents who can help them see just how amazing they are, teach them to hold their head high, and feel good about who they are. They do not need to look like that girl on TV, who they are, and what they look like makes them unique.
My husband and I spend a lot of time teaching the kids, now to follow what they see on TV. We want them to know that is not the way the world really works, and the fact that they have a handicap brother whom they see as beautiful teaches them to look pasted someone’s appearance or disability.
This Mother’s Day Dove and Walgreens are doing something special too! They are committed to showing moms in our lives something special, building positive self-esteem, inspiring women to reach their full potential, and see that beauty is defined in different ways. Which is awesome, and I couldn’t agree more! My definition of beauty might not be the same as yours, but that does not mean one of is wrong.
