My oldest daughter is a teenager, and I know the last things on her mind is calcium deficiency. I often find myself thinking back to when I was a teen, and how I felt about things, and how the mind of a teen works, lol. I want to try to understand what she is thinking, feeling, or doing in the teenage brain of hers, rather than jumping to conclusions, starting a fight, and setting the stage for a rocky relationship. I remember when I was a teen, I just wanted someone to understand me, or at least try to I try to do that for Catie. So far, it’s made our relationship amazing! Maintaining a healthy relationship, and teaching my children how to life a healthy lifestyle is important to me.
Teenage girls have so much on their mind I can almost guarantee that Catie has not stopped to think about calcium deficiency. If it wouldn’t have been for my mom, I would have not known what calcium deficiency was. Naturally, my mom wanted to be sure I was getting enough calcium in my diet, especially since I did not drink milk. My mom has always been one to make sure we are taking our vitamins, and getting everything out body needs. I remember when I was about 15 years old, she made me try this new product she found, VIACTIV®. They were these amazing soft chews with calcium, that tasted GREAT! I took them the entire time I lived with my parents, and I admit it. Once I moved out, I stopped taking vitamins, and focusing on my health the way I should have.
When I had children, and a family I started to focus on my health in big ways. Once you become a mother, things change. Suddenly, your health is more important than it used to be because you want to be around for your children, and set a good example. I still look for calcium from other sources, and take VIACTIV® as needed, and now I am focusing on my children’s health, and guess what? My oldest, Catie will not drink milk.
How Much Calcium Does My Teen Daughter Need, Is She Getting Enough?
My teen daughter, Catie and I have a special relationship. She is really more than just my daughter, she is one of my best friends. We talk pretty much anything, lend a shoulder to cry on, hugs daily, Catie is GREAT at driving me nuts, and if you have not noticed by her pictures she is a total nut, who always makes us laugh. Nobody will ever drive me nuts like Catie, and I want to be sure she is happy and healthy all throughout her life. Even when she has a family of her own, I will be there for whatever she needs.
Teenagers might like to act like they are all grown up, but physically they have a lot of growing to do – important growing.
According to a study that was published in The Journal of Nutrition in 2010, 86% of teen girls do not get enough calcium in their daily diets. Many of us do not realize that calcium is something we need to think about for our children, especially those reaching their teenage years. Did you know that teenage girls need more calcium per day than their mother or grandmothers? The recommended amount of calcium a girl 9 to 18 years old needs is 1300 milligrams, and the recommended does for women 19 to 50 is only 1000 milligrams. Calcium plays an extremely important role in strengthening teeth and bones, as well as helping other muscles, such as the heart and nerves function properly.
While doing a little research for this post, I learned a lot about things my daughter needs to build strong bones. Thanks to my mom knowing what I needed, I have been taking VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chews (as needed) for a while now. Now that I am aware of the importance of calcium for young girls, I have talked with Catie about how she can take better care of herself, build strong bones through not only her diet, but weight-bearing exercise and supplements, like VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chews, as needed. All us girls made a committment to one another to not only continue to build memories, but build strong bones together as a family.
