How Can You Stay Safe While Using Public WiFi?

Are You Being Safe While Using Public WiFi?

Before I meet my husband I was always traveling, moving, or on the go.  It was rare that I would sit at home, but then again I had no kids, no husband, and no pets to care for.  It was fun while it lasted, and I am extremely happy where it lead me.  Looking back I wouldn’t change a thing.  Today when I travel I think about my family, where they want to go, what they want to see, how we are going to safely get there, and even using public WiFi crosses my mind.  How safe are you when it comes to using public WiFi?  Are you aware of ways to protect you and your families private information while you are traveling, or using the internet at the coffee shop?

If not here are a few tips to help you protect your personal information, and stay safe while using public WiFi.

Do not assume all WiFi connections are secure like your home network.

Your home is called a private network, and is typically password protected. Only people with the password, who you trust can access your private network.  Public networks are open to everyone, and I mean everyone.  You do not need a password to access a public network, and if you do not protect yourself you are putting your and your families information at risk.  You may not even know until it’s too late!   Know the difference, and when you need to protect your information.

Stay safe while on public WIFi by signing out!

If you finished using an account, SIGN OUT! Do not just close your browser; be sure you hit sign out.

Passwords

Do not use the same password for everything.  If someone learns one of your passwords they will only have access to that one program, website, or account.  It is still not fun, but at least they will not have access to all your checking account, credit cards, and anything else you have..   When you choose a password(s) try not to make it something easy to guess.  If someone has access to your personal information they know your date of birth.  Be sure and avoid passwords, or pin numbers that can be easily guessed.

Don’t forget about those settings!

Check out devices settings.  Consider turning off sharing options, and allowing your phone to connect automatically to a nearby WiFi service.  At least you will know when you are accessing a public network.
