The tagline for one of our favorite Tumblr accounts—UNF@$YourHabitat–is “Terrifying motivation for lazy people with messy homes”. Everyday, the blog posts challenges, cleaning tips, and motivating before and after pictures to help readers “unf@$” not just their homes, but also their finances, jobs, and relationships. The blog’s creator encourages readers to “Jump in…don’t worry about catching up. This is about doing what you can, when you can. 5, 10, 20 minutes at a time. And then back to your normal life.”
5 Cleaning Tips We Learned From UNF*@$YourHabitat
These are just a few of the amazing cleaning tips that the site has to offer:
1.Put it Away
75% of a home’s mess is made up of stuff that we didn’t put away after we finished using it. The two biggest offenders are laundry and dishes. While we might be motivated enough to throw our clothes in the washer and dryer, few of us make it to the “fold, and put away” stage. Remember this crucial step, and you’ll never have to worry about unf*@$-ing your habitat!
2.Keep Less Stuff
The other 25% of mess can be explained by the fact that we simply have too much stuff, and not enough places to keep it all. There are two ways to solve this problem: less stuff, or more storage. The former is always the easier of the two. If your house is getting so cluttered you can barely find any empty floor or counter space, it’s time to take a step back and determine what things you need, and what things are just f*@$-ing your habitat.
3.Take Breaks
The idea of dedicating an entire afternoon—or even worse, a whole weekend—to a marathon cleaning session is a daunting idea, even for the neat freaks among us. Splitting up the chore into 20 minute sessions and taking intermittent breaks is a sustainable and easy way to keep your habitat unf*@$ed…as long as you don’t make even more mess during those breaks!
4.Make a Little Effort When You Can
A little goes a long way when it comes to keeping your home prim and proper. While it can be tempting to kick your shoes off right at the door and plop down on the couch when you get home from work, take the extra 10 steps over to the closet and put them in their proper place. Or, take a few seconds to dump a bit of cleaning solution in the toilet. Most of the work will be done over night!
5.STOP MAKING EXCUSES
This one really speaks for itself, but the creator of unF*@$yourhabitat says it best.
“If you’re still making excuses, you don’t really want to do it. If you realize that 20 minutes is really no big deal, I can pretty much promise that things will get drastically better pretty quickly.”
These posts give a glimpse of all the tips and advice offered, but for a full dosage of motivation, head on over to unF*@$yourhabitat! We promise you won’t regret it.
