Only a few more days and the girls and I will be hitting the road to good old Albuquerque, NM alone. Which means; it is time to start thinking about fun car games for kids to play while we are on the road. We do not travel alone just the gals, but I felt like we all could use some gal time, and know my husband and son would enjoy some time together too!
Shawn doesn’t get home until 6-7pm, which doesn’t leave much time for father son time, especially if he has to cook. Plus, I know he doesn’t want to cook, so I got him and Bud a few Rayberns deli sandwiches. Now the girls and I can focus on getting ready for our trip, and I can get to thinking about some games for them to play while we are on the road, or I just might be a huge mess by the time we get there. Not even joking,
I have to do something to keep my kids busy while they are in the car. Over the years we have played some pretty fun games in the car, and rather than worrying about which games we can remember I figured I would make a list, and put Catie in charge of “Road Tip Game Time.” That’s what we have called it for years.
There are some fun car games for kids to play while traveling, you can even get creative and put your own fun twist a game you have played for years. Here are thirteen games for kids to play in the car that I hope you find useful, and even fun.
Thirteen Games For Kids To Play In The Car
I Spy With My Little Eye
I am sure most of you have heard of, or played I Spy with My Little Eye. Its super fun, and the kids normally go on and on with it. Let’s say I see a tree, I cannot tell anyone it’s a tree, so I have to say, “I spy with my little eye something green.” The person who guesses that I am talking about a tree will go next. Things can get interested when you are playing car games with kids.
1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a thumb war
My kids almost always jump in the car ready for a thumb war, lol. They will remember who lost, and won. This game is easy the two people who are playing will need to be close to one another. They will hook their four fingers together, so their thumbs are pointing up. Then the war begins. The two players will try to pin down the other thumb. Whoever can pin and count to three wins.
A B do you C what I am talking about
One person will pick the right hand side of the road, and the other person will get the left. You might have to toss a coin to see who gets which side lol. Each player will look for the letters in the alphabet; they have to stay in order, and go all the way from A to Z. The first person who finishes is the winner.
Twenty Questions
On person will think of something like a bear. The other players will ask them questions to try to find out what they are thinking. It has to be yes or no questions, like “Is it pink?” or “is it in the car?” After they have asked all 20 questions, each player will have a chance to guess, and the person thinking of a bear will tell them what he was thinking.
No Repeats
Everyone will agree on a topic, like animals. One person will start and say bear, the next person says duck, horse, etc. They keep going until they cannot think of any more animals, and the best part – no fighting, because there are no winners or losers. They can even start again on a different topic, like plants.
Guess that song
One person will hum a song out loud for everyone to hear, and they will try to guess what song it is. Might be from a TV show, or your favorite artist. You have to listen close.
License plate game
You might have heard about this, or played it while you are in the car board. Typically we give Catie the pen and paper, since she is the oldest. Then we all look for license plates from different states, and we cannot repeat. The goal here is to get all 50 states. Honestly, I have never seen anyone get all 50 states, lol.
Tic Tack Toe
Another fun game is tic tack toe, and you only need pencils and paper. Which if you are like me, there is about 15 pens in your car at all times.
Slug bug without the slug and bug.
I know, it’s crazy, but there are no more slug bugs. I mean sure you might see two every three months, and that is not enough to play slug bug, so we play it without the slug or the bug. I remember how hard my brother and I would punch either other. The last thing I want is my kids beating on one another. So we choose a color of car, and brand of car, and every time we see one we yell blue Chevy, or Silverado. Whoever spotted the most of the vehicle you are looking for wins, but the have to see them before everyone else. I remember playing slug bug with my brother and sister, things always got a little crazy, lol.
Simon Says
Just the same as you would play Simon Says any other time, only keep in mind that people cannot jump, and they must be buckled lol. Regardless, we always manage to have fun. Someone starts out telling everyone else something they have to do, like “Simon Says, Wave your hands in the air.” If they do not say Simon Says, and just tell you “Wave your hands in the air.”
You have to pay attention, and listen. If Simon does not say, don’t do it.
Guess my drawing
Give the kids a pen and paper, and allow them to draw something in only 3 minutes. Once the three minutes is up they have to hold up their drawings, and everyone tries to guess what it is.
Questions
Children love to ask questions, why not have a car traveling game for kids that are nothing but questions and answers. Have one person starts out by asking a question, and whoever they choose to ask it too must answer. Of course, you want to make sure the questions, like “what is your favorite thing to do in the summer?” or “What is your favorite sport?” It’s a fun game, and everyone gets to know one another a little better.
Drawing on windows
Yes, it’s just as it sounds, and the kids Love it. They are only allowed to do it when we travel, so it stays fun.
There are plenty of fun car games for kids; that will help you feel less stressed since you are traveling without your spouse or adult companion to help you.
Honestly, I am worried about my husband and son, lol. I was not worried until my husband called me at Wal-Mart today, and asked “Hey babe, what are we going to eat while you are gone.” Yes, my husband knows how to cook. He is a great cook, but he has been working LONG hours, and I know he doesn’t want to cook when he gets home.
Since we tried the Rayberns deli sandwiches the other day, and we both enjoyed them, I asked him what he thought about slacking for dinner while we were gone, and enjoying his time with Bud (our son). Of course, he agreed right away. Not only are these sandwiches awesome, but now he is thinking of things they can do when he gets off work since he doesn’t have to worry about dinner.
If you are looking for a great lunch idea, that fast, east and take amazing, or if you are headed out-of-town and want to be sure your hubby eats something he enjoys be sure to check out Rayberns the next time you are at Wal-Mart. Oh, and be sure to take advantage of the $1.50 off coupon for even more savings visit Rayberns.
