Ten Tips To Keep Your Dog Cool This Summer

It’s almost summer, that’s for sure.  I don’t know what the temperature is like where you live, but it’s already getting nice and hot in Southern New Mexico.  It’s time to get the family out and about, and if you’re like us your pets will likely be going along at times.  Our dogs love going with us when we go camping, fishing, to the lake, hiking, to the park, or anywhere else they are allowed to go. However, it’s also important to remember to keep your dog cool.

While it’s fun to take your pets along, and they often enjoy their time out of the house there are a few things that are important to remember with the summer heat whether they are out and about or at home in your yard.

Don’t let your pup get dehydrated

Keep plenty of clean and fresh water out for your dogs, and place it in a nice shaded area.  While you are going for walks it’s always wise to bring a water bottle filled with cool water for both you and your pet.  It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Kiddie Pools

We have two kiddie pools for our dogs, and they jump in them several times a day to cool off.  You can also use misters, or poke small holes in a hose to work like a mister to help keep them cool.

Indoors

When it gets too hot outside try to bring you dogs inside where it is cool.

Car

Don’t leave your dog inside the car.  Whether it’s on with the ac running or off, don’t do it too many dogs die every year from this careless behavior.

Walk early in the morning or late evening

Since walks are important be sure you are walking your dog while it’s cool in the morning or evening.

Sidewalks and streets

Think before allowing your dog to walk on the sidewalk or streets, they are HOT.  If you cannot walk on them barefoot it’s likely they will not be able to handle the heat on their feet.  Cement and asphalt get super-hot.

Shelter

Dog houses are good to have, but they are not a good way to keep your dogs out of the heat.  Dog houses have a way of trapping heat inside. If you are looking for a way to keep your dog cool build him something that is not enclosed, and is in a shady spot.

Swimming

If your dog loves to swim take them swimming to cool off.  Don’t allow your dog to overdo it while swimming.  My dogs tend to get pretty worked up when we head to the river for a day of swimming, be careful and keep an eye on them.

Traveling in the car

If you must travel with your dog in the car consider putting up sunshades to help keep the car cool, keep the air conditioning on, and once again, please do not EVER leave them in the car unattended.

Watch for heatstroke

Its summer, and extreme temperatures can cause your dog to get heatstroke.  Pay attention for signs of heatstroke, and talk to your vet on how to properly handle it.  A few signs are heavy panting, rapid heartbeat, glazed eyes, lethargy, dizziness, uncoordinated, vomiting, deep purple tongue, and more.  Be sure and and talk to your vet so you fully understand the signs of heatstroke and how to properly handle it if it occurs.

The summer is for having fun for both you and your pet.

Speaking of fun, be sure to visit Purina Pet Park Walmart website and download the Blippar app.  It’s fun, and you’re pet will love snapping shots with Helmet the @Beggin pup!

About the Blippar App

Blippar is a fun app that allows customers to engage with brands through an immersive experience.  Blippar becomes the lens through which the world can be, and converted into content rich, interactive fun.  Whether you are at home, or in the store Blippar brings your world to life.

Blippin is easy, simply visit Pet Park online at Walmart.com, download the app on your tablet or smartphone, and let the fun begin.  Hold up your device to an image you wish for it to recognize, such as Purina Beggin Strips and watch the screen fill with interactive fun.  We had a blast using Blippar with Purina Beggin Strips.

We used the new Blippar apps and scanned Hamlet the Beggin’ Strips pup from our computer screen.  Hamlet’s even more fun on your smartphone or tablets, he even fetches and does a backflip, and the best part is that you and your pups can snap a shot with the one and only @Beggin Strips Pup.

Check it out!  My husband Shawn had to have his picture with Hamlet, and when Skittles and Piper realized who Shawn was having his picture taken with they too had to take a picutre.

Here is Skittles!  He’s super happy because he not only love Hamlet, but he LOVES beggin’ and Beggin’ Strips!  Oh, and he’s really good @Beggin too!
