This time of year is full of things to do. One problem with March is we never know what the weather will do. Luckily, we have the Mens and Womens College Tournament and Skittles to keep us entertained.  It’s competitive, exciting, and full of underdog stories to celebrate all month long! College Basketball parties pop up all over and most of them are a bunch of guys drinking beer and eating pizza, yelling at the TV and at each other. That’s great if you are an obnoxious, smelly, hairy guy, what about the reserved folks and the children? we want to have fun too! Well, we have the answer Skittles.

SKittles Tourney

Now how are Skittles going to save the day? That’s easy, have a Skittles Tourney party. Fun games and cupcakes full of Skittles, topped with Skittles, and sprinkled with Skittles can make any party a hit. First, though, we have to find a bag of Skittles big enough to bake some awesome cupcakes and to play the fun Skittles Tourney game we have planned. That’s when going to Sam’s Club is such a big help.

Skittles Pallet

We headed to our Sam’s Club and after headed through entrance we made a B-Line for the candy aisle. Before I even had to search the candy aisle, right at the beginning of the aisle was a big candy pallet full of Skittles. The pallet had a ton of 54 oz bags of Skittles, which would be perfect to supply our part with all the sweet, tasty, colors of the rainbow. They were super easy to find and really affordable so I grabbed two bags. They were perfect for our Skittles Tourney snacks and for our Skittles Tourney games.

We are armed and ready to get this party started. First things first, we need to get our Skittles cupcakes ready for the games. It really is an easy recipe and doesn’t take too much time at all. You can make them from scratch, but we found it easier to use a vanilla cake box recipe and toss some skittles into the batter. Tips that help are: 1) use mostly light colors, the darker colors sometimes bleed and make it look too dark on not as colorful and 2.) only fill the cups 1/2 way up because the skittle and ooze out of the cup if it’s too high.  Don’t worry though, the sweet yumminess of Skittles is full in these cupcakes.

We made a separate batch as well of plain vanilla cupcakes. After these puppies had cooled completely we cored the middle out and filled them with Skittles candies for a fun surprise.

skittles sprinkles

We also made some Skittles sprinkles!  We divided each color of Skittles, placed them into the Ninja, ground them up, added a little food coloring for extra color, and placed them on the lowest setting in the oven for about 10 mins just to pull out a little of the moisture.  We still have some left for decorating more cupcakes, cookies or cakes.  It’s by far the BEST sprinkles I ever tasted.

Time to get our party set up. With all the cupcakes cooled and ready to decorate, we set up a building station. Each kid has their own supply of frosting, sprinkles, and Skittles candies. They can use a knife to spread the frosting, but we find it more fun to spoon a little into a plastic bag and cut a tiny hole in the corner to make decorating more fun. We want the kids to show how they would “Taste The Rainbow.” Using a kitchen timer, or any kind of timer, we set the time limit to 30 minutes. The children can decorate their cupcakes whichever way they want, and I couldn’t help but jump in from time to time.

skittles

The children can decorate their cupcakes whichever way they want, and I have to be honest, I jump in a few times. Frosting is flung and Skittles are slung and after the time limit is up, the “buzzer” goes off and now the judges come in. Lining up the cupcakes, with no name attached, rank them from first to last. First, Second, and Third place get prizes for their creation. But, what about all the rest? Don’t worry, we were sure everyone left with a consolation prize.

skittles game

The next game we love to play is practically mess free and a lot of fun. This game definitely incorporates the basketball games, and even if the kids arent’ interested in the scores, it gives us adults the chance to catch up! This game is easy to prepare for. Thankfully, we have the big 54oz bag of Skittles to supply us with the pieces. Each kid gets a collection of 20-30 Skittles, really depending on how much you want to give.

Gather around the TV to whatever College Basketball game is on at the time, or a game you are wanting to see, it doesn’t really matter. Now, for each team, take note of the colors on their jersey. For each Skittles candy that a child has of the color on the jersey, they receive 5 points.  You will definitely want to keep score with some pen and paper. Now, we can do this for a game at a time, OR build a bracket just like they do during the Tourney. It’s easy to find all the games during March, they are on almost every channel it seems. So, starting with the first game and calculating the total points we see who wins on each bracket. Going along with each game, the children with the most Skittles of the particular jersey color advances to the next level of the #SkittlesTourney.

Within an hour or two the games are progressing and the SkittlesTourney bracket is filling up. What the winner receives as their prize is totally up to you. A fun Skittle’s grab bag is what we give the winners. It is a very easy and fun game and definitely gets the kids interacting with each other and keeping track of the game. It’s  competitive, exciting, and full of underdog stories.
