The Ultimate Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Recipe

I shared this Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly recipe back in August of 2015 on Jenns Blah Blah Blog as part of a sponsored partnership with our friends at Smucker’s. During the rebranding process, I moved a lot of recipes over, but I also thought it might be fun to recreate some of them. This particular post, well it took me back to all the PB&J moments I had with my kids when they were younger and I certainly wanted to start with this one.

In the original post, my kids were just heading back to school, and I always had such mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I looked forward to the extra time to get things done, but on the other, I completely missed them—the house was always way too quiet with them gone.

Sheesh, here I am over a decade later. Now, I only have one kid left in the house (she’s 16 and starting to drive!), and I am a very proud MeeMaw! 🙂 Life certainly has its ups and downs, and while I am so excited to venture into MeeMawhood, I definitely miss when my children were little.

Man, where does the time go? My biggest piece of advice is to make memories and enjoy every last second while your children are young, because one day you wake up and they certainly aren’t little anymore. It’s a bittersweet feeling for me for sure but I am so very blessed.

But the beauty of peanut butter and jelly is that you never outgrow it, right? I’m 46 years old and still enjoy PB&J, and a grilled peanut butter and jelly is the absolute holy grail of sandwiches, lol. Seriously, if you have never tried one, you need to—they are delicious!

It had been several years since I made myself a grilled peanut butter and jelly, so recreating this post was certainly deliciously exciting. I ate two of these bad boys while styling the plate. So if you notice in some of the pictures there is a lonely one sandwich, well that is because I only had two slices of bread left lol.

Just a heads up, half the beauty of the grilled PB&J is how messy they are. I didn’t dress up the pictures much for this particular recipe because if you are looking for something a little less messy the traditional PB&J is certainly the way to go but the mess is worth it, these are so good.

How to Make the Ultimate Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Recipe

The grilled PB&J is seriously as easy as it sounds, and you only need a few ingredients.

Ingredients for a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich laid out on a kitchen countertop, featuring four slices of white bread, a jar of creamy Jif peanut butter, a jar of Smucker's grape jelly, and a full stick of butter.

Ingredients:

  • Smucker’s Grape Jelly (or your favorite flavor)
  • Jif Natural Peanut Butter
  • 2 Slices of Bread
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter

Directions:

Start by warming your frying pan on a medium heat.

Two slices of white bread on a blue plate, each topped with a dollop of room-temperature butter. A silver butter knife sits nearby, ready to spread the butter for grilling.

Spread a light layer of room-temp butter on each slice of bread.

Two slices of white bread for a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Both slices are covered in a protective layer of creamy Jif peanut butter to prevent sogginess, with a thick scoop of Smucker’s grape jelly added to the center of one slice.

Cover both sides of the bread with peanut butter, this acts as sort of a barrier so the jelly doesn’t make your bread soggy.

Place a coating of jelly on one side of the bread and place the other slice of bread on top.

All the Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly Deets”

Can I use crunchy peanut butter? Absolutely! While I usually make these with creamy peanut butter, you can certainly give crunchy a shot.

Can I use something other than butter for the pan? Yes! If you are out of butter, a little bit of coconut oil on the outside of the bread or the bottom of the pan (just like making a grilled cheese!) will give you a beautiful, crispy crust.

Can you add bananas? Yes! You can add slices of banana and by layering it inside with the peanut butter before grilling.

What else can I add to this? You can apply a light dusting of powdered sugar to the outside of the grilled peanut butter and jelly. It certainly sweetens things up.
