It’s cold in most areas across the United States right now. It’s also time to consider how to keep your dogs warm this winter. It’s been my experience that often people think dogs can handle the outside weather because they’re dogs, which isn’t true. Some dogs are built for cold weather conditions, but not all dogs.
I have three pitbulls, a Rottweiler and a yellow Labrador. My pitbulls are much more delicate when it comes to keeping warm than my Labrador. Which makes sense if you think about the breeds and type of hair. Our Labrador, Piper likes to spend time outside during the colder months, but likes to be indoors during the HOT southern New Mexico summer. Our pitbulls would rather spend time outside during the spring and summer months while Piper is inside.
Much like the keeping dogs cool in the summer, it’s important to consider how the cold can negatively impact them due to things like age and arthritis.

Keep Your Dog Warm This Winter With Doggy Sweaters.
If you’re dog isn’t used to putting on a sweater to stay warm, not to worry, they’ll get used to it and probably learn to love wearing a sweater. My old pitbull, Skittles has bad hips and I notice it bothers him more when it’s cold outside. He didn’t start wearing a sweater until he was about 8 years old, and it took him going outside wearing his sweater once for him to see the benefits. He loves his sweaters now.
When choosing a sweater focus on the dog’s age, health, and size. They need to feel comfortable, and you might want to consider the color. The brighter the color the easier it is for people to see them if they happen to get loose.
Keep Your Dog Warm By Allowing Them To Stay Inside When It’s Cold Out.
Thank goodness, we recently added on to our home because I don’t know what we would do with 6 dogs in the house. Our dogs are well-behaved, have manors, and stay calm to stay in the house. It took some time, but dogs are smart and they’re eager to please so don’t give up on them. Also, the younger the dog the more energy they have so it’s important to take them on walks if you want a calm dog in the house.
If you’re going to be a committed dog parent you need to get over the hair and dirt because number one priority is keeping them warm. Trust me I do understand, we sweep, vacuüm and mop more than anyone I know, but our dogs are worth every bit of the work.
Keep Them Warm By Providing Them With a Warm Outdoor Doghouse.
Without a doubt there will be times your dog(s) want to stay outside and that’s fine, just make suer they have proper outdoor housing. It needs to be safe, warm, and not have leaks or cold floors.
Your Dog Need Plenty of Water Even When It’s Cold Out
Regardless of the temperature outside dogs need to have access to water. If you keep your dog outside for any length of time this might require you to break their water, they have access to water 100% of the time.
