My girls have been asking me since the start of the summer to make chocolate bowls with balloons for our next family movie night. I’ve put it off for long enough. They are fixing to return to school, and they have been so good this summer. It would be wrong of me not to spend a little time making this special treat for them. Plus, it will be a fun way to spend a little quality time together. My youngest is always in the mood to lend a helping hand if chocolate is involved, lol.

Raise your hand if you love dark chocolate and would rather have an ice cream bowl made out of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or whatever other kind of chocolate you fancy! I knew it, who wouldn’t! Not only is it fewer dishes, but it’s certainly more delicious.

How to Make Chocolate Bowls with Balloons

While I was at Albertson’s the other day, I picked up some DRYER’s Frozen Custard in yummy Old Fashioned Vanilla and Chocolate Malt flavors.

Things you’ll need:

Here is how you make chocolate bowls with balloons in a few easy steps.

  • 1 Bag Balloons
  • 1 Bag Chocolate Chips
  • Cooking Spray
  • Wax Paper
  • Dreyer’s Frozen Custard (we bought Old Fashioned Vanilla and Chocolate Malt)
  • Toppings, of course

Let’s make these awesome chocolate bowls with balloons:

Before you start your chocolate bowl project, be sure to wash and dry your balloons. They will need to be completely dry for this project.

Blow up balloons about 4 to 6 inches. Typically the smaller the bowl, the better things work. I try to make the bowls about the size of a coffee cup because I can’t handle much more chocolate in one sitting. When blowing up your balloon, be sure you’ll be able to fit it into your bowl of melted chocolate without any problems.

After balloons are filled with air, spray each of them with a non-stick cooking spray. This will help keep the balloon from sticking to the chocolate and prevent your chocolate bowl from breaking.

Melt your chocolate. You can use dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, or any other chocolate that melts nicely. Mine is a melting pot, but you can do it in a double boiler or using the microwave; just be sure not to overheat the chocolate.

Dip the prepared balloon into chocolate. If it pops, allow your chocolate to cool down for about 5 minutes.

After dipping the balloon, place a spoonful of chocolate on wax paper and set the dipped balloon on top of the chocolate. This will help for the bottom of the bowl.

Allow chocolate to set up completely in a cool area. I like to let mine set for about 2 hours, then place them into the freezer (before removing balloons) to help things set up.

Once the chocolate is set up, it’s time to cut the balloons. I did this by snipping a small hole in the top of the balloon.

If things work correctly, it should deflate and for the most part peel away from the chocolate. You’ll have to peel it off the bottom, which should be easy, but remember to be careful to not break the bowl.

TIPS: Don’t purchase thin balloons, like water balloons. They pop almost every single time, and it’s not a fun mess to clean up. You can add white chocolate and swirl it with the dark chocolate for different chocolate bowls by covering in dark chocolate as the base color, then adding a little white chocolate on the top of the first coating and swirling them together using a knife, or you can hold the balloon upside down and use a spoon to pour the second coat and let it run down the edges if you don’t want the colors swirled together.

I’ve always wondered how to do those chocolate bowls.Definately will have to give it a try. Silly question and probably weird to wonder. Do they have like the balloon smell or taste? I know it’s probably silly to ask just curious.
