Do you remember when you began to learn how to read? I remember bits and pieces, I remember how much I enjoyed reading, and a few ways my parents made reading fun for kids. I can think of my favorite childhood books, why I liked them, and I think I even have a few of them. Reading can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a major drag if someone doesn’t make reading fun at some point.
Reading is fun, a good book is an adventure into space, or another world if you want. All you need is your imagination, ability to read, and the book to take you on any adventure you choose. In order for a child to enjoy reading someone has to spend the time to make reading fun for kids, and teach them how to use their imagination while reading. My mom and dad helped me understand how fun reading can be. I honestly don’t know what would have happened if they wouldn’t have taken the time to make reading fun.
Whether your child is learning to read, or an experianced reader there are still ways parents can make reading fun.
6 Ways Parents Can Make Reading Fun For Kids
There are plenty of ways parents can make reading fun for kids. Here are a few of the ways that have been beneficial for me and my kids.
- Read together – Before I learned how to read my parents would read to me, and look forward to our reading time together. Now that I’m a mom, I see how excited my children get about our time spent reading together.
- Eyes closed – Read a book to your child. Have them close their eyes, and picture the story in their head. It helped me learn how to use my imagination while reading a story. My dad would tell me to close my eyes, and imagine the story in my head. At the time, I thought he was trying to get me to fall asleep. Now that I am an adult, I understand he was teaching me how to use my imagination to take myself to another place, and really understand why reading is fun.
- Bring stories to life – If you’re child just finished staying the night with friends, try having them pick out a book that resembles their night. It’s just a fun little way to find an exciting book, and make things a little more interesting. I always enjoyed it!
- Reading to siblings – My daughter loves to read to my youngest daughter, and it’s helped make reading more fun for her, because all the pressure is off. She isn’t worried about how fast she is reading, or whether she pronounces the word correctly or not, and she is always surprised how well she reads. I try to listen when I know she is reading to Mattie, so I can tell her what a great job she did.
- Learning is good – Remind them that learning is good; mistakes are good because they know they’re learning!
- Personalized books – I bought my girls personalized books a while back, and they love them. I don’t’ know whom many times, they have read them, or we have read them at bedtime.
