how to choose a good diaper

Things I Look For When Choosing Disposable Diapers For My Active Girls

DisclosureThings I Look For When Choosing Disposable Diapers For My Active Girls bannerI remember being a new mom, choosing disposable diapers was harder than I thought it would be.  Luckily I received tons of diapers from my baby shower, which allowed me to play with a few different brands for free, but not everyone is able to do that, and diapers are too expensive to purchase and not use.  There are plenty to choose from, and it can be a bit stressful if you don’t know what you are looking for.  Honestly, even if you do know what you are looking for all the different brands can be overwhelming.

If you have followed my blog for a while you know my youngest is only in diapers at night, and my 2-year-old niece recently started staying with us. My husband picks on me all the time because I still want to add another one to the mix, lol. Hey, it’s why I stopped working at the bank, and started blogging full-time. I wanted to stay home with my family, and have another baby I can raise, without paying the big bucks for someone else to get the daytime hours, diaper changes included.

Four Things I Look For When Choosing Disposable DiapersI have been changing diapers for so long it honestly doesn’t bother me, it’s become part of life, lol. I have also learned how important a good diaper is.  A quality diaper, that lasts all night helps the girls sleep better, which helps me get the sleep I need to keep up with 2 little ones, help my other 3 with homework, cook dinner, clean, keep up with my blog, and everything else that needs done. WOW, after a day of caring for my daughter and my niece I am one sleeping mom. I cannot wait to crawl into bed, and dream of cupcakes and butterfly’s. Yes, I really did have a dream about cupcakes and butterfly’s. I know, I need adult time, but at least I am getting sleep at night.

Mattie has always been a good sleeper, but when my niece first started staying with us I felt like a new mother all over again. I couldn’t get her to sleep, when I did she would wake up after a few hours. I was lucky to get a few hours of sleep a night. Once she was able to get used to being at our house things got easier. When she first came to our house, I don’t even know what kind of diapers came with her but I tossed them out right away.  A lot of the reason she was waking up she didn’t have a diaper that lasted through the night, they were stiff, and had to be uncomfortable. I am extremely picky when it comes to putting a diaper on any child in my house. Over the years, I have learned how to find a good disposable diaper that works for us.

Here are a few things that are important to me when choosing disposable diapers.

Comfort

My oldest daughter hates going to the store with me when I have to pick up diapers, because I always do my research. I want all my kids to be comfortable, whether they are awake or sleeping. I avoid stiff diapers, for obvious reasons – they cannot be comfortable. I look for diapers that are nice and soft on the outside, soft and stretchable waist and side panels, and hypoallergenic soft inner liners. The soft and stretchy waist and side panels make a huge difference if you are looking for a comfortable diaper. Trust me, my daughter tells me. She is old enough she tells me what she likes and doesn’t like about a diaper. As a matter of fact, if she doesn’t like it she will not wear it. She has been like that ever since she stopped wearing diapers during the day. I guess she experienced how it feels to be diaper free, and it’s made her even pickier than she was before.

I don’t know about you, but naps are important for me, it’s when I get chores around the house done, and if I am lucky a blog post done. Nighttime is even more important, I have 4 hours to work before I got to bed, I need that time, and I need my kids to sleep all night long. I need something to keep up with active children, and active sleepers, lol. Seriously, I am not sure if the girls move more while they are awake or asleep. CRAZY sleepers! I don’t want to buy a diaper for day, and another for night.

I know, this might sound crazy to you, but it’s important to us, and I have always promised to be honest with you about everything.  When Mattie was too little to understand, it didn’t matter as much as it does now, but it’s always been something I look at.  If I was every faced with two diapers of equal quality, I would pick the one with the cutest character for sure, lol.  Now that Mattie is older, and has her favorite characters in books, and on TV she wants something cute on her diaper.  I don’t blame her, it’s fun!  It doesn’t seem to matter much to my niece, YET.  I am sure it won’t take long, and she will become as crazy as the rest of us lol.

Price

Adding another child to our household has been hard on us financially.  There was little planning involved, one day we had 4 children living with us, the next day we have 5.  Saving money suddenly became more important than it was a few weeks ago.  The only way I will try to save money on diapers is if I think I am purchasing a quality diaper.  I don’t want to be uncomfortable all day, and I do not expect my children to be.  Lucky for us we were provided this chance to try Well Beginning diapers from Walgreens, and Mattie has added them to her “Approved List.” I know it sounds silly, but she really has one, and until now they have all been name brand diapers.

Well Beginnings Diapers are available at your local Walgreens, and have been a great go to diaper for us. We live about 2 miles from Walgreens, if we need to grab something quick we run to Walgreens. It’s been nice being able to save money on diapers at Walgreens. Well Beginnings have all the features that are important to me, and my picky daughter, lol. I love that they are soft on the outside, have soft stretchable waist and side panels to make sure the girls are comfortable.  As far as leakage protection, so far so good. Thankfully, we have not had any leaky nights due to the soft inner liner with natural botanicals, vitamin E and aloe.

Well Beginnings gets two thumbs up from us!

I do want all of you to know, once we get things figured out with my niece I will share pictures.  She is a doll, and I know you will love her, but things are so new, and I don’t want to upset anyone by sharing pictures online.

We have been very picky about diapers for my granddaughter. I have not tried the Walgreen’s brand simply because of my experience with other not name brands. After reading your review I think we will be giving it a try. Thanks.

So many brands, I like reading reviews of some of the store brands out there; they can save a ton of money if they work.
