Here is a craft that is super easy to do and pretty cheap as well. I made these tiles with my 6-year-old daughter. We picked up the tiles at our local Re-Store (it’s a thrift store for building supplies). They cost me $2.80 for 12, a steal of a deal!

I already had most of the supplies at home, so all we had to buy was a can of acrylic sealer and some felt pieces, which were 25 cents each. I am so happy with the results of this craft. We gave ours away; they made a great gift.

What you need:

  • Ceramic Tiles
  • Sharpie Markers
  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • I didn’t have one, so I used an old hand sanitizer bottle. You just need something to hold the isopropyl and drip it onto the tiles.
  • Mod Podge or School Glue (must dry crystal clear!)
  • Felt pieces
  • Spray acrylic sealer

What you do:

  • First, give each tile a little wipe down with the alcohol and let them dry
  • With your Sharpies, start coloring designs.

When your tile is covered in marker, take the dropper and start dripping the isopropyl all over the top. The colors will start to run and blend. You can lift your tile a bit if you want the colors to run a certain way, or just leave it flat and let the isopropyl alcohol do its work.

The beauty of this craft is that if you aren’t happy, simply wipe your tile off with a paper towel while it’s still wet and start again. OR you can let it dry and add color. Just be careful. Doing this will moisten your other colors as well.

After you are happy with your tie-dyed designs, let your tiles dry overnight.

Take your modge podge and cover the tile: I found that sponge brushes work the best. The BEST thing I used was my finger. Just scoop up some Modge Podge with your finger and lightly rub it on.

NOTE: If you use a sponge brush, make sure you keep it well saturated. You really want it gliding across the tile. If some of your design wipes off in the process, let the modge podge dry, go through the first few steps again, and add more color. Then seal it one more time with the modge podge before using the acrylic sealer.

After your modge podge is totally dry, give the tiles a few coats of acrylic sealer. Let them dry.

Once your tiles are sealed and dry, cut some felt pieces to match the size and glue them onto the bottom. I used a hot glue gun.

If you plan on giving them as a gift, stack them up and wrap them with a ribbon. Voila! DIY Tye-Die Coasters!
