Ten Things I Wish I Would Have Known Before Becoming A Mom

Do you remember bringing your first child home from the hospital?  I don’t think there is any way to be prepared for parenthood.  There are so many things I wish I would have known before becoming a mom, but I’m still learning because every one of my children is so different.

I honestly don’t know what I would do if we did not have a little one running around, and a bottom that needs changing.  Mattie is just about potty trained, but now we have my niece living with us.  She will be in diapers at least another year or so.  Right about the time we have my niece out of diapers, guess what… Yes, my husband and I (fingers crossed) will have a little one, and I’ll probably write another post with a few more things I wish I would have known before becoming a mom.  Every child is different, and every parenting adventure is different.  I can honestly say, being mom rocks!  I can’t think of anything or anyone I would rather be than mom to my babies.

There are so many things I wish I would have known before becoming a mom.  People told me things, and gave me tips, but I didn’t understand until I became a mom.  It’s amazing the way we change when we have our first child.  I am sure we all have different things we wish we would have known before becoming a mom, but here a few things I wish I would have known before becoming a mom.

Here are a few things I wish I would have known before becoming a mom:

There might not be a magical moment 2 minutes after you have your baby.

Right after I had Mattie, my husband asked me if I wanted to hold her and I said, “Give me a minute.”  I remember thinking something was wrong with me, but I was tired, I hurt, the nurse was doing and saying something, my husband was talking to me, everyone was racing around, and the doctor was fixing to stitch me up.  It was okay; I still had that magical moment, when I realized I was holding an angel.  Once I was back in the room they brought me Mattie, and I fallen in love like never before.

You never be the same person again.

It sounds scary, but it’s not!  You will drive safer, worry about your financial status more, being a good role model, your health, nutritional value of food, and life will have a new meaning.  I feel more alive since becoming a mom.

memoriesHow Fast They Grow Up

You hear how fast kids grow up from everyone, it’s much more quickly than you can ever imagine.

Don’t buy anything until after our baby shower, and shop smart.

Don’t jump the gun and start buying things for you child.  I would wait until after your baby shower, and don’t spend a lot of money on newborn clothing, it’s not likely they will be wearing them long.  I jumped the gun and gave away so may things with the tag still on them.  It’s hard not to be excited and buy things, and you might not be able to resist, lol.  If that is the case, try to buy things that will fit them later.  If I could go back, I would have focused on things 18 to 24 months.

Just how unconditional love is.

I have never known love as intense, unconditional, and limitless as the love for my children.

You will not go to the bathroom alone again.

It’s not likely you will be in the bathroom alone again for an extended time.  I honestly don’t remember the last time I was in the bathroom alone.  My youngest hears the bathroom door shut, and before I know it, she is coming.  She doesn’t care what is going on; she wants to be in the restroom with me.

Quotes about children

Slow down, don’t rush!

I used to rush through life, I wish I would have slowed down a bit, because they grow up too fast.  I am glad I caught myself rushing before I missed anything else! Go slow and enjoy every moment with your baby! It doesn’t matter if they are 3 or 15, don’t forget to make new memories together every chance you get!

Don’t get caught up in things, you forget about your loved ones.

I got caught up in being mom, daily chores, and spending time with my children.  My brother had to pull me aside one day, and ask me to not forget about him.   Remember those who matter to you, love your children, and your children should be around as everyone who loves them.  The more they have, the better!

Toddler peaking head at playgroundTake lots of pictures!

You can never take enough pictures.  Take photos and videos of everything, if they do not turn out well you can delete them, but children grow so fast you will want pictures.  FYI – Never stop, take 1000s of pictures of everything!

Try new things

Don’t be scared to try new things – diapers, wipes, etc.  There are some great off brand items that will save you a ton in the long run.  If you don’t like them, move on to the next, or go back to the brand you’re used it.  Its worth a try, saving money is excellent!

Why is the bathroom thing so true. and it is for EVERY mother…If I do manage to get the door shut before they make it in, you can guarantee to see some fingers sliding in under the door!!

I’ve never had kids, but I can relate to many of your wishes. Make time for the others in your life who would love to love your kids. AND THEY GROW UP SO FAST!!!

I love this! As I am not yet a mom, I’m glad to read this beforehand. The bathroom one made me laugh, and “I feel more alive after becoming a mom” is such an incredible sentiment.
