“Antenatal depression and anxiety are strong risk factors in developing postnatal depression.
However we know that early treatment for antenatal depression can reduce the risk of developing postnatal depression,” Ms. Richardson said.
“Society makes it difficult for expecting and new parents to acknowledge that they are struggling. We are surrounded by images that portray this time as blissful, but our culture of celebration doesn’t encourage conversations about the challenges that pregnancy and parenthood bring,” she said.
“Perinatal depression affects whole families and can have devastating impacts on nearly every area of life, including a parent’s relationship with their partner and children. When mum or dad is not functioning well, it is hard for the family to function well.”
“The message we must get out is that it’s imperative to talk about perinatal depression and anxiety and seeking help early leads to a faster recovery.”
