Was your New Year’s resolution to lose weight?  Are you looking for ways to stay motivated to lose weight?  I know we are only a month into the New Year, You may have committed to losing weight and are already finding yourself wondering how in the world you will stay motivated to lose weight.  Weight loss is a journey; it doesn’t happen overnight, and trust me, I wish it did.  Sure, there is plenty of fad diets, but in the end, they don’t work and are not healthy.  The last thing you want to do is damage your body, We only have one and we should take care of it.

Most of you already know I started my journey to weight loss before the holidays.  I know it’s a bad time to start.  I didn’t lose much weight, but I didn’t gain any either.  I knew if I didn’t start, then I would probably have a bad attitude during the holidays and possibly gain more.  I know myself, and I planned for the holiday’s.  Anyway, I have found myself looking for ways to stay motivated, so I thought I would share what I do to help me keep my motivation to lose weight.

Five Tips To Keep You Motivated To Lose Weight

Five Tips To Keep You Motivated To Lose Weight

Write It Down: If you are already on the road to losing weight, you should have a goal in place.  If you have not already written it down, do it!  As soon as you write it down, it’s a commitment.  Remember to be realistic about your goals.  In order to keep the weight off, you are going to need to do things the right way.  Spend some time, do some research, and be realistic.  Remember, if you are planning on keeping it up, you will need to take things slow, A couple of pounds a week is realistic.

motivational quotes

Support: I wish I had a workout partner, but I don’t so I have had to get creative.  Rather than having a workout partner, I have my kids, who I promise to go on walks with, take to the park, play Just Dance on the Wii, and do loads of other things with.  If playing Just Dance for an hour or two with my girls isn’t a workout, I am not sure what is.  They wear me out, and they do it on purpose too.  Oh, and if you couldn’t tell, I love motivational quotes.  They are a great way to find that little extra bit of motivation you need to make it through a week.

Sleep: I have struggled with this one and am finally getting into the swing of things.  Sleep is so important if you want to stay motivated to lose weight.  I wasn’t losing weight; I was doing everything I was supposed to when it came to eating and working out.  My problem?  I wasn’t sleeping.  Since I started sleeping, I have had more energy, been in a better mood, found it easier to stay motivated, and, you guessed it, lost weight.

Technology: I am a huge fan of technology!  There are several great devices out there to help you stay motivated.  I use several apps on my phone and recently started using a Jawbone, which is amazing. My husband has been using a device similar to the Jawbone for a few months and done great with it, which is what made me want to try the Jawbone.  You might remember him writing a review on the Misfit Shine from Best Buy Mobile Specialty Stores.

motivational quotes to help you lose weight

I have been using the Jawbone to track my level of activity and calories burned.  Which has really helped me want to do better each day.  It even reminds you to get up and move, which is great.  Rather than sitting down for hours working, I get up and move, then come back.  The Jawbone has made me want to do better than the day before by taking more steps, eating better, and moving more.

It’s really helped me learn more about my sleeping pattern and what motivated me to get my bottom to sleep.  Since it tacks hours slept, time it takes to fall asleep, how many times I wake up, and other great things.  Oh, it even has a Smart Alarm, which wakes you up at the perfect moment during your sleep cycle.  Another thing I like about the Jawbone is that you can use it with friends and follow each other’s progress to stay motivated.  We all have that little competitive edge.

If you are looking for ways to stay motivated, I highly recommend trying a device like the Jawbone orMisfit Shine .  It’s really helped me, my husband, and I know several other people who are using a similar device and love it.

music to motivate your while you workout

Music: Last on my list is music.  Music is powerful.  I use music to help set the mood, I have an awesome line-up of songs I love to jam to while working out, walk with the kids (they ride their bikes, not ignoring them lol), and Just Dance has some rocking songs that make me want to get up and move.  Get motivated with the sound of music!  If you are not already adding music to your workout, it could be the missing link.  When I put on music and workout, I forget I am even working out; I get caught up in the song and feel pumped.  Studies have shown that music can increase the intensity and duration of a workout by as much as 15%, which I have found to be true.  If you are not jamming out, you could be missing out on those benefits.

You certainly have posted some great tips for staying on track with losing weight. It really does get much harder as you get older though. Being in menopause, I can say that getting proper sleep is a difficult thing to do. I am on the strangest schedule and it’s not helping matters any.

My husband is on a journey to improve his health, and has found that the days after nights with good sleep are so much easier than others. As for the music, I HATE the buds that come with the iPod – I’d love a pair of these yubuds!

I like your suggestions. Music would help me the most. Whenever I play my favorites, I can’t help but getting up to dance. I might as well exercise to it.

I committed at the first of the year to lose 20 pounds however long it takes. I lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks but then my hubby found the discounted goods and brought home my favorite cookies and I gained 4 backs. I have been using Garcinia Cambogia combined with Green Cofffee Extract since Dr Oz is giving such great reviews. I have Fibromyalgia and Arthritis in 70% of my body so moving is very painful, but I have a video for staying fit while sitting and am trying to get back into yoga again. For me getting into a regular schedule of just moving and stretching is where I need to start and as the pain subsides I can do more. If the weather was better I could go to the gym and do water aerobics which I will when it is.
I wish I had a phone to use wither of those apps they sound like exactly what I need, but I have a kitchen timer and can use that to remind me to get up and move at least once an hour.
Thanks for the great info!

It is so hard to stay motivated. I finally have a workout partner and worked out for the first time since having my son two months ago. I am definitely going to try adding music to my workout. I think I’m going to burn a Workout Music CD today. Thanks for the tips!

great tips! I started my lifestyle change in July last year. I was so depressed see to seeing myself in my bathing suit I just cried. I finally talked my doctor into helping. He prescribed meds to help me get started but only after I agreed to see a nutritionist. She helped me a great deal to not only know what to eat to lose weight, but for life, for my health condition. I have to say, I have not regretted my lifestyle change even though many people say they could not do it, they were never to the point in their lives I was. God Bless!

I just went back to work and am finding more desire to move more at work. I do have to move a lot anyway at work and move fast! But I am finding ways to get a little more movement that really stretches the muscles. I feels great!!

I was on a mission last year to lose fat. I found using myfitnesspal helped me a lot during the first few months – it gave me a much better awareness of my calorie intake.
Then later on, I started using fitocracy to track workouts – it turns exercise into a game where you earn points and level up…it also has a huge community to give you encouragement along the way!

I’ve also found that music is hugely important when exercising – it can really help push you on that little bit harder.
Having a good set of sports earphones is crucial. I’ve heard good things about Yurbuds before, I really must check them out!

I have an elliptical that I just walk past on my way to do laundry. I’ve not only plateaued, but am sliding up the scale not in pounds lost, but gained. It’s time to get out those ear buds and listen to a great book or as you said turn the volume up on my favorite songs & jump on.

I would always use PUBLIC transportation to go to my school because i was too bored to walk there until I decided to start moving a bit and now I am walking 4km every day and feeling good i made this choice!

I need to get motivated. I hate exercising! Once I get started, I get sore and give up. The best way for me is to turn on some music and tune out everything else.

Thank you Karen! Sometimes (maybe twice a month) I get bored or I am too tired or it has a really bad weather so I take the bus but now I am known as the “the walking motivator” from my friends and from time to time they try to hide from me when we are off from school so that I don’t make them walk!hahahaha (it’s very funny when i see the frightened look on their face when i accidentally see them waiting on a bus stop)if they won’t join me, I walk by myself cause I refuse to be that passive when I am only 24 (my friends are 18-22)..i am a very lazy person in general but when I see a sunny day I want to live it instead of getting pushed and squeezed inside a bus..:)

Excellent post! I agree that writing down what you want, what you did, and where you want to go will help keep you motivated, especially when you meet a goal. Also, as stated above, music is a very powerful tool and can help motivate any individual to get up and move. I suggest changing out playlists and songs so that you don’t get bored and to help keep the workout interesting. Thanks for sharing your tips!
